TEHRAN, Feb 16 (Bernama) -- Iran's Islamic Azad University (IAU) is looking at the possibility of
opening a branch campus in Malaysia, its International Scientific-Cultural Cooperation director-general M. Setoudeh said today.
He said the university, founded in 1982, planned to have an office in Malaysia first, before pursuing with the initiative to open the branch campus.
"Azad University is also keen to have some kind of cooperation with a university in Malaysia," he said in a briefing to women journalists from various countries taking part in a programme organised by Iran's Islamic Culture and Relations Organisation (ICRO), in conjunction with the Islamic Republic's 30th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.
Setoudeh said IAU held discussions with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris recently, concerning cooperation regarding scientific and cultural ties.
Apart from Malaysia, IAU also plans to expand its campus to Kuwait and Azerbaijan in the next few years, and also open branch campuses in China and Mauritania.
The IAU, a private network of universities, already has branches in Zanzibar, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Armenia, and is acknowledged as a university which provides programmes that promote innovation and development.
With a student population of some 1.5 million, IAU is considered a mega university and is the largest in Iran and the world.
The university has a mammoth role in the promotion of culture, education and science throughout Iran, and now seeks to establish such academic relations with other counties.
In line with this, it has signed agreements and memoranda of understanding with over 45 well-known universities worldwide.
Setoudeh said that IAU, a non-governmental and non-profit network, did not rely on any financing from the government or any other sector.
"IAU does not belong to anyone and expenses are covered by students' fees," he added.
